Shanling M3X

Pros: Good value, great sound, and form factor. Small and light enough to carry about. I like the main Shanling app, and the ability to turn off android. Balanced connection gives options. Cons: Takes a little while to boot. Battery drains strangely quickly from top to 90%, and then lasts pretty well. Standby retention is OK but not great. Android 7.0 is slightly bereft of features and renders itself obsolete on some apps, meaning support is a concern. RAM is slightly under-powered, making some apps not as smooth as I would like. (Amazon Music scrolls in a jittering way) Not amazingly responsive. Would love to have had an FM radio tuner like my Sony NW-A55 - hope they can unlock the tuner in the Qualcom chip somehow.

Excellent mid range DAP

The Shanling M3X has excellent tonality and timbre. Although I have not closely monitored the battery life I would say it’s very close to performing as advertised. That was one of the reasons I picked up this unit. The design is a bit plain and although the buttons have a solid and good tactile feel to them, the edges of the buttons feel a bit sharp. I don’t really mind it as it gives confidence your finger or thumb is squarely aligned on the buttons. The operating performance is on par with a unit in the price category. Not nearly as quick to boot as my M11 or R6 2020 but respectable for the price. Overall I enjoy the M3X and recommend it to those looking in the 350 dollar price point.

Thick but Small DAP that delivers the power

I am super impressed by this little DAP. Its comfortable in the hand to hold and use. The physical buttons are very are very responsive and have a satisfying click when you press them down and the same for the volume knob and button press on that. The Dual Sabre DACs on here are honestly no slouch with all the IEMs and Headphones I use ranging from Moondrop Arias, Koss headphones, ATH-M50x and even an 80 ohm Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro. It ran all of them without flinching in the DAC Turbo mode easily in their respective low or hi gain mode. Also using a balanced cable for my IEMs showed that once you make the upgrade if you have really sensitive and more clinical sounding IEMs you will hear the difference but the ability to put a 3.5mm in and just set the DAC Turbo to use both has been great and at this point almost leave it on that mode exclusively. The battery life is great on it with a really solid performance even in the DAC Turbo mode which draws more power. I think the biggest win for me personally is the fact that this is an Android DAP that you can install the Google Play store on which was a godsend for me since I have some local media but also a lot of my music is done streaming through apps like: Spotify, Youtube Music, Amazon Music and maybe will try some others like Tidal and Deezer later but the fact that its a Android backend means no limitations including if you want Youtube or customize it the way you expect. I will say though the Prime mode where it uses the Shanling app for local music has not been great though so i leave mine in Android Mode since I use Pulsar+ for my local media playback since it does a better job organizing and showing my music thats also less buggy with all its features while still having a good UI. I can highly recommend this to anyone looking for a slightly chunkier Android DAP and wants something that is in the all rounder category in my opinion
