The King, Retuned and Refined

More than one and half years after its initial release, the most popular and praised Thieaudio Signature series IEM is ready to make a comeback! The Monarch has been completely redefined with driver overhauls and an enhanced tuning. The Monarch was a monumental milestone for both Thieaudio and the global audio community, hallmarking not only one of the first IEM’s to properly integrate the EST driver technology, but also firmly establishing Thieaudio’s place in the world of Hi-Fi audio. Our R&D team has been following up with the reviews and comments from the audiophile community to refine that which was already one of the most revered monitors of its class and present the ultimate form of the Monarch: Monarch Mark II.

A New Engine to Set New Limits

Our goal for the Monarch MKII was to enhance its technical performance and introduce a more balanced tuning, while staying true to the original spirit of this monitor. We took this opportunity to update all of the internal drivers, swapping them out for their latest counterparts and rearranging their configurations to achieve an even more optimal performance.

The 10mm dynamic driver has been upgraded to a brand new composite diaphragm driver. With a tremendous increase in membrane tension and magnet strength, the new driver allows extreme responsiveness. And when engineered to specifically reproduce only the sub-bass frequencies, this dynamic driver becomes a subwoofer, producing even tighter and more impactful kick drum and bass line punches. Additionally, two dedicated subwoofer balanced armature drivers were paired with the dynamic driver, bringing about an immaculate coherency between the lows and the rest of the frequency spectrum.

The heart of the Monarch has always been its extremely precise and neutral mids that make it such a capable studio monitor. To emphasize this trait, we reconfigured the balanced armature drivers, reinforcing this core range with four mid-frequency drivers. Doubling the midrange drivers from the original Monarch presented incredible advances in technical performance. Distortion was reduced, while the resolution, clarity, and articulation of the mid and treble sections were significantly enhanced. This single change was enough to make the Monarch MKII feel like a completely new beast compared to its predecessor, all the while still maintaining the characteristic studio-neutral midrange.

The latest electrostatic drivers are incorporated into the Monarch MKII, and rearrangement of driver location has minimized unwanted tubing resonance and extended its high frequency rolloff compared to the original Monarch. This means that the treble range is more even and detailed, and our innovative incorporation of the EST drivers into the setup allows for a greater sense of sparkly, airy, and high-resolution atmosphere in your music. The Monarch MKII continues the Thieaudio legacy of being one of the few in-ear monitors in the world to properly utilize the EST technology.

Retuned for a Balanced Perfection

One of the controversial sound aspects of the original Monarch was its super defined and emphasized sub-bass. While some enjoyed the clean separation between the sub-bass and the low-mid frequencies, others voiced concern of the sheer quantity of sub-bass. To bring about a resolution, we have slightly decreased the volume of the sub-bass to more appropriate levels, while pushing the low-pass crossover from 150Hz to 200Hz. This change still maintains the clean and punchy subwoofer-like characteristic of the lows that doesn’t muddy the mids, but introduces an ever-slightly warm texture to fundamental low-frequency instruments such as the bass guitar. The mid-frequencies between 200Hz and 1kHz are still kept at a ruler-flat neutral that makes the Monarch MKII an impeccable professional monitoring device. The mid-treble transition between 1 and 2kHz has been pushed back to 3kHz, which reduces any nasal or harsh vocal textures, while still emphasizing the bite and crispness of instruments. Every aspect of the tuning process has been scrutinized, being meticulously tested by ear and measurement equipment, and we are proud to present the perfect vision that is the Monarch MKII.

The Stock Cable of Monarch MKII

With our new release, we have also upgraded its previous EST cable. Beloved for both its feel and high resolution sonic properties, our EST cable has been one of our top selling products. We have improved the physical texture of the cable by using a soft braided paracord material. The Monarch MKII's stock cable still maintains the ultra-pure silver plated 26AWG OCC copper litz wires, but the additional strand incorporation gives it a slightly meatier feel and a richer sound. Most significantly, this new stock cable features the proprietary "Smart Switch", a new modular plug design, allowing you to choose between 4.4mm balanced, 2.5mm balanced and 3.5mm unbalanced terminations, simply by swapping out the plug ends. This reduces the need for bulky adaptors, giving your setup a more complete look and feel. The 2-pin connectors on the stock cable are also updated to provide a more secure fit with your IEMs.

Best sounding IEM I've purchased

Granted I've not tried out too many, but comparing to the ones I do have (7Hz Timeless, Moondrop Blessing 2 & AKG N400NC), the Monarch MK II have far superior clarity of the sound being delivered through my dank lil Fiio BTR5

Of course it's also one IEM that costs significantly more than all the others I've purchased (with AKG's only being 50$ when I got it), I guess it'd make sense. However if you are looking for the best sound of the bunch I don't think you'd go wrong with Monarch MK II.

Potential End game?

After taking the plunge and buying the Mon MKII, I had high hopes. Maybe even too high some may say. But I’m happy to report that after a few months with them, I can confirm they’re fantastic.

I’m no reviewer so please take what I’m about to say with a grain of salt. A very large grain of salt.

Bass is handled well. The Mons have a scoop in the mid bass region, thus giving the Vocals a very natural playback. Some may consider the Mid bass lacking to some degree, but I don’t have this issue. With dance/electronic, rap, or R&B tracks where the mid bass is mastered to have extra punch, I find that it’s the perfect amount on the Monarchs. Sub bass is great, good rumble, not bass head level, but enough to hear and absolutely feel it. One thing that stands out with the monarch’s is that the Low end has texture. Something I never quite understood with my less expensive sets. The monarch has literal texture in the sound, especially with drum kicks. The quantity may not be earth shattering, but the quality Of the low end is fantastic.

Onto the mids, I mean What can I say? I think these have the most natural sounding mid range I’ve ever heard. They are clear and crisp with amazing timbre. There are some songs where the vocalist literally sounds like they are in the same room with me. I mean, it’s truly amazing.

The treble is handled well too. This set is more neutral with a bass boost than anything, so treble is not too much, but it has enough sparkle to shine micro and macro details. One thing to note however, and this maybe down to ear anatomy but for me, 2khz comes off as somewhat harsh in some tracks, particularly with female vocalists. It may have something to do with that EST as some people have noted that EST timbre can come across as harsh in some cases. Other wise, the monarch’s have nice air up top with beautifully rendered cymbal strikes and upper harmonics on say, electric guitars.

Technicalities are amazing as you’d expect. Resolution is TOTL. Imaging is good, not the best I’ve heard actually but very good nonetheless. Stage is very wide and particularly tall, actually. Another detail I’ve yet to experience as well with my less expensive sets.

That does it! Sorry for such a ridiculously long write up!

Awesome mids, best vocals I heard so far, sub-bass is good but the mid-bass lacks punch / slam, otherwise it would be perfect for me. Overall a very satisfactory purchase as long as you don't mind the bass too much.

1st Impressions:

This is a very well balanced IEM.

I was initially worried that it might be a bit too bright, sharp & ‘shouty” but this wasn’t the case. Again, well balanced is the operative word.

I’m not an ‘Audiophile’, yet, i appreciate good, quality sound reproduction that is basically neutral with some emphasis to the lows & highs for an analytical listen but yet versatile for casual listening. I’ve come to realise that most headphones & IEMs don’t do so well in the mid-bass; muddying up the sound. Not so, with TA MkII.

Also, as a musician, when transcribing music, i need to hear as much clear detail, definition & separation as possible without the treble being sharp like knives; with the TA MkII, I now have a tool that can finally give me all of that.

Previous to this, all previous listening gear muddy up the mid-bass (among other things) too much, or are too light in the sound lacking detail & clarity (tuned for a ‘fun’ consumer friendly sound a.k.a. boosted lows & highs?)

Be aware that i”m not a Bass-Head or Treble-Freak, nor an In-your-Face-Vocals Fanatic. Again, neutral is the word, with a little bit of ‘fun’ mixed it. The primary purpose is to hear faithful reproduction of the music. If it sounds bad because of the miking, production issues, i wanna hear it. If the recording & production is good, i wanna enjoy it!

My musical wants & tastes are quite simple and Thieaudio Monarch Mark II is my end-game IEM.

MY Opinion

The cable is very resistant to tangling or memory retention
The cable presents more microphonics than non-braided cables
The terminations hold solid and are very practical
Length is adequate (I can run it between my T-shirt and pullover and back into my jacket pocket (I believe the length is 1.4m))
Color isn’t bright or flashy but neither to subdued to be overly dark (aka, not to light to be goldish and neither to dark to tend excessively to black)

The Faceplates are gorgeous. The distinction between the dark and the light tones let it have a 3D look akin to what I would imagine a top-down view of the Grand Canyon would look like if scorched by fire and then drizzled with gold dust (unit variation must be accounted for)
The sprout is quite large
The provided ear tips are all right but not as good as, spin fits, Type E ore AZALA ear tips which all don’t fit unless you are okay with shoving them on with force

Soundstage is one of the widest I’ve heard and is extended both in width, Hight and depth to the same degree. The soundstage therefore doesn’t suffer from a corridor effect (horizontal and vertical, with a lot of depth), wall effect (no depth) or top close effect (no vertical extinction).

Sound location or collocation
This is where I believe most people will find out if they love the MKII ore not. In my opinion the soundstage creates three semicircles in which it locates instruments. The singer is in the second row. This works out really well for singer songwriters. Songs such as “Emely - James Arthur“, “Best days – Alessia Cara”, or songs from “Eric Clapton” spring to life and have a real intimacy. Strangely this closeness is lost in other genders. The singer is overshadowed by the other instruments thereby dampening the impact of the song or even making it sound slightly muffled

Resolution is second to none I have listened up until now. The definition of every sound is astounding. Problematic is only that this is highly dependent on gendre. As said the found is mind blowing by singer songwriters, but with rock, hard rock or other gendres it seems to loose coherency and get distorted thereby not achieving the technical chops its able usually. Performance is in my opinion highly dependent from the library that is put through them.

Bass punches hard but doesn’t rumble though the body. It’s very pressable but doesn’t get overwhelming though its surely not light or neutral but I would say it dose sound more like a concert sound than a small scale, private audience, reproduction. The bass surely leans on the fun side of bass without compromising accuracy and delivery of both the bass itself and of the other frequencies

Mids can be bang on the bug and be what make these IEMs a must have and a dream set for a lot of people. This is dependent on the library one has since the singer can sound amassing with some types of music but muffled or overcast with others

Highs were special for me. I’m sensitive to highs and treble and I never got fatigue from this set. It always only got to the edge of what might be fatiguing if persistent but never maintained these frequencies to long to actually become fatiguing. This without losing the sense ow howl or cutting down on the dynamic image that the song was intended to reproduce.

What baffled me was how similar the MMKII sounded to the Vision Ears EXT. They sound virtually identical; with time you can detect differences but its quite hard. I’d compare it to trying to spot the difference between to twins that dress and act alike. Impressive if you consider that the price tag is 2.8 times higher.

The CA Andromeda 2020 in my opinion has worse technical abilities but I do prefer the sound signature better. The singer is closer to the ear or is located more Infront of oneself soundstage wise. This is appalling to me. Though I appreciate the layering of the soundstage better they miss the bass and formidable tactical abilities of the MMKII

The MMKII sounds similar to a MB2 Dusk on steroids with character and bass. By this I mean that the coherency is similar just a couple steps better and then spiced up with some warmth and a better bass

So, I sold them because they didn’t fit my library. I believe they are absolutely amazing though if they a worth the price is a matter of perspective. If I was the kind of person that listens only to singer song writers, definitely, but since I’m not I don’t believe them to be versatile enough to be bought. If an IEM cost this much due to my economical abilities, it has to be perfect. Since it only covers a small part of what I would listen to I would have to get other IEM’s to cover the “MMKII shortcomings” which isn’t something I’m okay with at this price point. I would rather buy other IEM’s that are similar to the MMKII at a lesser price tag (in the sense that they do a niche of a surt...

My ears not your phones

I am basically delighted with these IEPs. There is a problem with fitment, because my ear channels are very narrow and even with a very small tip I have difficulty getting them in (this is not an issue of the overall size of the Monarchs - they are large - but specifically the business end). Inn my case, the fit cann compromise bass levels. When I do get them well-placed, and recognising that they may not be comfortable for too long because of the narrow ear channels, sound quality is really very nice. I'm certainly pleased I bought them.
