Planar Magnetic

A different way
to move the membrane.

Explore a thin diaphragm with conductors spread across its surface. Compare planar IEMs, headphones and mixed-driver products through the sound, fit and setup that matter to you.

Includes products containing this technology, whether used alone or in a multi-driver design.

Full-range, or bass in hybrids
BassMidsTreble

A dynamic driver can handle the whole mix. Multi-driver IEMs often assign it the lows.

Inside the technology

What to consider

The architecture is the distinction

Instead of a separate cylindrical voice coil, the conductor is distributed over the diaphragm. The sketch shows that arrangement, not a particular commercial driver.

Full-range or a specialist role

A planar product can use a single planar driver or include a planar element in a hybrid. Read the complete technology list before assuming every frequency comes from it.

Choose the implementation

Compare the actual sound and source requirements. Do not turn planar into a promise of stronger bass, better imaging or automatic reference tuning.

Worth knowing
before you choose.

Is every planar headphone open-back?

No. Acoustic design is a separate product attribute. Check the actual model.

Are planar and Micro Planar interchangeable filters?

No. Micro Planar is listed separately for compact planar implementations.

Are planars always harder to drive?

Do not decide from the family name. Check the product sensitivity, impedance and source guidance.

Sources and diagram context

The construction drawings are conceptual and not to scale. Model-specific claims belong to the linked product documentation.

Technical references checked September 2026. No frequency-response curve is generated from a technology label.

Shop by sound

Prefer to start
with the sound?

Pick a tonal direction first. On a technology page, the products above narrow to that sound.

Fuller body and a gentler upper balance.

Illustrative tilt, not a measurement.
